If the sales clerk doesnt play you should ask if there is someone working in the shop that does play. As a last resort you should even ask other customers in the store. Not listening to the different guitars is like shopping for a car but never test driving any of them. Guitars have very different feels and tones and you should listen to a lot of them to get a sense of what you like. Dont be bashful in this respect. Guitarists are usually a very gregarious bunch and a guitarist will almost always jump at the chance to play for someone else. If you dont yet play well and you cant find somebody to play for you I recommend you not purchase a guitar. 3. Play harmonics on the strings. This is an excellent test of the quality of the guitar. Playing harmonics is the technique of plucking the note with your right hand and only lightly touching the string with your left hand. Test the harmonics of all the strings on the 5th, 7th, 12th and 19th frets. If you do not know how to play harmonic notes ask the sales clerk to help you.

4. Examine and test the tuning pegs. Do they look clean and sharp? Wind and unwind them while watching and feeling for smooth turning motion.

5. Visually examine the whole guitar. Look it over very carefully from front to back and top to bottom. Are there any small cracks? Are the frets firmly installed into the fret board? Are there any cracks or glue exposed around the bridge?

6. Tap on the front of the guitar (The sound board) in a variety of different spots. Does it have a rich echoing sound or are there spots where it sounds dead and limp? The internal structure of the classical guitar is very important for the sound and important for the longevity of it. Dull thud sounds could be an indicator of an inferior instrument.

7. Examine the details. Look at the purfling around the edge. This is the decorated pattern that goes around the full body where the soundboard or face meets the sides of the guitar. Is it accurately laid in? If this has variations and inconsistencies it is a good sign that the guitar is of inferior quality.

8. Dont hesitate to take a good look inside the guitar sound hole. You will see wooden braces in there. Do they look straight, accurate and well placed? If you see sloppy globs of dried glue around these braces it could be an indicator of inferior craftsmanship.

9. Remember that there are three distinct areas you must consider when purchasing a classical guitar: The Look, The Feel, and the Sound. If you keep all three of these things in mind and carefully examine the guitar in relation to these you will be able to choose an instrument that will bring you a lifetime of trouble free playing enjoyment.

Learning Piano Without Years Of Lessons!

So, you want to learn the piano. But you don’t want to spend years learning how to read music.

That’s understandable. Learning piano doesn’t have to be the hard chore so many believe it to be. In fact, it can be quite easy IF YOU START BY LEARNING CHORDS!

For example, in the lesson Reflections in Water, available below, we have four chords and a scale to create music with. We don’t need to read music and we don’t need piano tabs either. All we need is to learn how to finger one chord position and play the C Major scale. Then we can use these materials to create music with.

Learning piano this way is infinitely easier (and more rewarding!) than learning how to note read because we create it ourselves!

Once we have the chords under our fingers, we can explore the piano in a way that may never have been possible for you before. Many piano students don’t believe they have talent or skill to improvise but this is simply not true. All that is required is the desire to try it. Once students jump in the water, they can’t wait to take a swim and then they’re hooked!

Learning piano without years of lessons is not difficult. All it takes is the ability to learn a few chords and then experiment with them.

Now, if learning classical repertoire is your goal, then of course you’re going to have to learn how to read music. But reading music is not necessary in order to play the piano. Learning chords is!

Frank Rosolino Trombonist: Part Two

I ended my first article about this extraordinary musician with the following quote: Frank was a fantastic musician, but behind that cut-up personality was a troubled man. ? Benny Carter I’ll start this one with a quote as well…one from Frank’s friend, Roger Kellaway, who said, When somebody cracks four jokes a minute, we all should have known there was something wrong.

In recent days, I have had the opportunity to talk with Frank’s companion, Diane Armesto, who enlightened me on much of Frank’s background as well on some misconceptions. But far more importantly, she sent an album entitled Frank Rosolino, The Last recording, recorded at Gold Star Studio A on August 1, 1978 and released by Sea Breeze Records, Pismo Beach, California just this month. More specifically, Frank Rosolino – The Last Recording – Sea Breeze Jazz SBJ-3080, 1978 Recording 2006 Release, 54:30. All the tracks are incredible, but there is one in particular, Erroll Garner’s Misty, which made me pull over to the side of the road and listen…or rather, be mezmorized by it…..over and over again. Keeping in mind that the sides were recorded just four months prior to that fateful night in November, 1978, the sense of what I was hearing took on a surreal and spiritual quality. It was almost as if Frank was reaching out…trying to tell us something with his horn….

As Jeff Krow states on his promotion for this CD, Frank was placed with a then dream rhythm section of Larry Willis on piano, the incomparable Billy Higgins on drums, and the relatively unknown Kevin Brandon on bass. Song selections were all standards, with the exception of two takes of Rosolino’s own Waltz for Diane. There are also two takes of Erroll Garner’s Misty and the same goes for Jimmy Van Heusen’s I Thought About You. On Misty, Kevan Brandon gets a nice extended bass solo and Willis is featured prominently on most every track…..

During these recordings at least, his passions must have suppressed his demons and his highs (that could only be reached by his putting the horns to his lips, closing his eyes and blowing like only he could) seemed to have pushed aside, for the moment anyway, his depression. Something was going on here that I have never before heard on a trombone (and I grew up in a musical family). His double tonguing techniques and perfect pitch on Misty have to be heard to be be believed……….and the fluidity and incredible speed with which he works through the paces are breathtaking. As Diane says in her inspiring linear notes, Incredible speed, time, technique……stunning range of musical ideas….fantastic melodic/harmonic sensibility, rhythmic placement and swing feel…and enough turmoil in his personal life to perhaps inspire what trombonist John Fedchock refers to his playing as a ‘soulful presence of the blues. ‘ Frank’s decision to use a Conn Multivider was an exploration in sound that provided the creation of additional octaves from the original sound. The result has the effect of an electric trombone that truly sounds as if two or more trombones were being played in unison, yet still preserves Frank’s artistic integrity. It is a haunting sound, one that I will not soon forget.

…….enough turmoil in his personal life… Who really knows what sequence of events finally cascaded into the tragedy of that night. I cannot imagine anything worse than when a confluence of events come together and leave one with no viable options or emotional escape hatch. In Frank’s case, I will not even begin to surmise what was going on in his head during the fall months of 1978; I’ll leave that to Diane. However, when my brother Arthur, another virtuoso and great lyrical trombonist, passed away last October, I had plenty of time to think about the frustrations and turmoil that marked his 81 years of life as I sat by his bed for 40 consecutive days until the end came. And during that time, I also learned a lot about how highly talented artists try so hard never to sacrifice their artistic integrity….and it was a painful revelation, indeed.

Art, whose IQ was off the charts, had his own marital difficulties and his own eccentricities…or maybe even demons (don’t we all), though at the end he was married to a true angel before sadly she predeceased him by a year. But getting back to Frank, I think some of the inner torture, maybe a big part, had to do with frustration. To paraphrase author Gene Lees when speaking of Frank, the heartache of tough financial times combined with the searing frustration of seeing himself and other highly talented and academically trained musicians struggling to make it. And this, while bile-inducing, so-called rock stars, touted as artists, rode around in studio limo’s with members of their swarmy entourage. I had witnessed this with my brother and though he rarely discussed it, I knew it ate away at him…….and justifiably so. Indeed, there are so many wonderful and talented musicians who go unappreciated while they are with us. I do know that my brother was at his happiest when he had his horn to his lips and his eyes closed…and now I think I might even know why.

I will not try to seek resolution regarding this tragedy nor have I attempted to. I never try to make sense out of the senseless, for that is an endless loop. I do know, however, that one?s control, or the illusion of one’s control, can be taken away at any time by the random, sudden and scary nature of death. Suffice it to say we lost an extraordinary virtuoso on the trombone, one who inspired with his music. And as Diane Armesto suggests, I have been able to transform the horror of what took place into compassion for this man’s fragile psychological state and the madness that must have tortured and consumed him.

By listening to the pieces on this extraordinary CD, there is a soulful presence of the blues that is unmistakable. The music is all about a man with his horn to his lips and eyes closed who is safely ensconced in his sanctuary. And that’s the way I choose to remember him.There were four: Carl, J.J., Kai, and Frank. Now they are all gone.

Jazz As A Language: What The Improviser Does

Jazz is a language. Its practitioners are public speakers. Think of what happens when one learns to speak English, Korean or Japanese, for example. The process is the same as when learning jazz. You learn by listening and picking up figures of speech, then you learn to use them in your own personal manner to make statements by putting them together in paragraphs and sentences to tell your story.

If you were to speak publicly, you would want to know the story well (in this case the tune or composition), and you would want to know the vocabulary. You would practice telling the story, work out the rough parts, and then learn how to vary the story in a variety of ways, for example, short vs. long versions, different introductions, and endings, substitute words and phrases, rhythms, moods and pacing, and so on.

As with public speakers such as politicians, you get all kinds of jazz performer: those who are insincere, those who are slick, those who are brilliant and have their own voices and styles, those who are spontaneous, those who use easy to understand vocabulary (soft jazz), those who use complex language (Miles Davis, John Coltrane), those who are mediocre, and those who deliver a memorized or prompted (written) statement.

You get the comparison, so contemplate it in every aspect and you’ll understand. The only difference between an extemporaneous art form such as jazz and the spoken language is the fact that you can’t use it for such practical purposes as ordering a cup of coffee.

6. Tap on the front of the guitar (The sound board) in a variety of different spots. Does it have a rich echoing sound or are there spots where it sounds dead and limp? The internal structure of the classical guitar is very important for the sound and important for the longevity of it. Dull thud sounds could be an indicator of an inferior instrument.

If you keep all three of these things in mind and carefully examine the guitar in relation to these you will be able to choose an instrument that will bring you a lifetime of trouble free playing enjoyment.

Guitars One For Each Style

Guitar players cover a number of styles of music, from blues to jazz to rock to pop to speed metal and on and on. And since every style of music is different and every guitar is different, it would then seem a natural conclusion that each style of music is going to have a guitar that is more suited for that style. So, the question, for those who are considering taking up the guitar and getting their first one is, what guitar do you get? If you’re interested in jazz do you get the same kind of guitar as somebody who wants to play speed metal? Well, it might be an interesting experiment, but most likely the answer would be, no. So, what guitar should each person get, depending on what kind of music they want to play? Hopefully this article will try to answer that question.

Music is very diverse to say the least. Even within each style there are variations. For example, in rock there is hard rock, soft rock, metal, acid and a host of other sub categories. The sounds and more specifically, the dynamics of each are quite different. While The Eagles and the Allman Brothers might both be considered country or southern rock, depending on which side of the fence you’re on, their sounds are quite different. So without nitpicking we’re going to take the broad approach over the specific.

If you’re going to play music that is relatively soft such as folk music, you probably don’t want to get yourself a Rickenbacker electric guitar. Most likely you’ll want an acoustic guitar with a nice mellow and round tone. Why acoustic? Well, by the nature of the guitar itself it’s a lot softer. Sure, you can turn down an electric guitar’s volume but it’s more than just that. Acoustic guitars are much easier to control dynamics on. The reason is because the sound is not artificially amplified. If you pluck the string softly you’re going to get a soft tone. If you pluck it harder, you’ll get a louder tone. Of course an acoustic guitar is never going to get up to the volume of an electric unless you mic it.

On the other side of the spectrum, if you’re going to be playing in a heavy metal band, your acoustic guitar, with all the other instruments playing, such as keyboards, bass and drums, won’t even be heard. Plus the tone quality of the guitar itself just won’t fit into that kind of music. By their nature, electric guitars have a sharper and harder sound. Add distortion effects to them, which are hard to do with acoustics and you’ve got a sound that is quite unique. That’s why there are so many different electric guitar sounds.

Obviously, this is a very general overview of style to guitar choice. You can get a lot more specific, such as what type of acoustic do you get if you’re a country guitar player as opposed to somebody who plays jazz? John Denver based on lot of his patented sound on 12 string guitars while Harry Chapin stayed more with the traditional 6 strong acoustic.

Purchasing a classical guitar can be a difficult task particularly if you are not yet an accomplished player. Here are some tips and hints on finding a good quality classical guitar whether it is in the hundred dollar range or the thousand dollar range.

If you are have ever gone into a well stocked guitar shop you have no doubt been confused by the selection of guitars. There are literally hundreds of shapes, sizes brands and types of guitars. And the price can range from a hundred dollars to several thousand. .If you are a beginner, judging the sound quality can be difficult to do because your ear is not yet highly trained. Here are some tips to help you make a good choice.

When in a guitar shop and looking at the guitars you should always ask a sales person to help you. This way you can take guitars down and play them. If you cannot play very well you should ask the sales clerk to play for you so you can get a feel for the sound of the different guitars. If the sales clerk doesnt play you should ask if there is someone working in the shop that does play. As a last resort you should even ask other customers in the store. Not listening to the different guitars is like shopping for a car but never test driving any of them. Guitars have very different feels and tones and you should listen to a lot of them to get a sense of what you like. Dont be bashful in this respect. Guitarists are usually a very gregarious bunch and a guitarist will almost always jump at the chance to play for someone else. If you dont yet play well and you cant find somebody to play for you I recommend you not purchase a guitar. You should come back another time when someone is available to play or you can bring a friend who knows how to play.

Check the size and shape of the guitar

Classical Guitars, of course, come in different sizes and shapes and you should sit with a wide variety of them to get a feeling for what is comfortable to you. Your body shape has an effect on this. If you are over six feet tall the smaller guitars might not be comfortable for you and the fret board may be uncomfortable for your hands. So even if you cant play music you should always hold and sit with the guitars to get a sense of how the different ones feel.

Check the mechanics and playability of the guitar

Here are several things you should do when considering the purchase of a classical guitar.

1. Play every note on every string all the way up and down. Listen for frets that dont play properly. They will give a rattling sound and if this occurs on any fret at all you should put the guitar aside and try another one. This is a sign of inferior quality. Every string should play cleanly on every single fret.

2. Check the action of the strings against the frets in terms of how much pressure is needed to play notes and chords. You should play bar chords all the way down the frets to insure good pressure. If it is too hard to press the strings in order to make a clear chord this could be a sign of an inferior guitar.

3. Play harmonics on the strings. This is an excellent test of the quality of the guitar. Playing harmonics is the technique of plucking the note with your right hand and only lightly touching the string with your left hand. Test the harmonics of all the strings on the 5th, 7th, 12th and 19th frets. If you do not know how to play harmonic notes ask the sales clerk to help you.

4. Examine and test the tuning pegs. Do they look clean and sharp? Wind and unwind them while watching and feeling for smooth turning motion.

5. Visually examine the whole guitar. Look it over very carefully from front to back and top to bottom. Are there any small cracks? Are the frets firmly installed into the fret board? Are there any cracks or glue exposed around the bridge?

Guitar Players Palm Muting Builds A Strong Right Hand

Playing guitar requires a technique that is uniquely different from an instrument such as piano. Think about this for example, you can drop a roll of quarters on a piano and get a clean crisp sound out of the keys. The guitar requires a little more finesse with both hands in order to get notes to sound (other than the open strings). Most beginning guitar players focus most of their attention on the left hand (or fretting hand for you lefties), and rightly so. The left hand needs to learn the grid pattern of the fretboard ? where the notes are, where to hold your thumb, how much to squeeze down etc. For the most part, their right hand just holds a pick and swipes away at the strings with little regard to control.

A strong right hand is essential to becoming a complete guitarist. The right hand is the key factor in controlling dynamics, tempo, and clarity. If you want to increase your right hand control and accuracy, practice scales, arpeggios and chord rhythms with palm muting. By palm muting, you are ?training? your right hand to be where you want it to be at all times. Make sure each note comes out equal. Don?t go so fast that you can?t hear each note clearly, you may be over-muting or not muting enough. It may be tricky at first, but stick to it.

Here are some ideas to get you started. First, keep in mind that there are no rules in playing music or guitar. However, as my students know, I do create ?temporary rules? for the sake of developing certain techniques or theory knowledge. So, for now, let?s make alternate picking a temporary rule. Downbeats will get down-picks, and upbeats will get up-picks when playing eighth notes. When playing sixteenth notes, the first sixteenth gets a down-pick, two is up, three is down and four is up. Discover different rhythmic variations of eighths and sixteenths, use strict alternate picking and of course palm mute all of your notes. Palm muting should sound like the notes are muffled, not choked off.

This practice strategy is great for acoustic as well as electric players. Work palm muting into your daily practice schedule for at least 14 practice days. When done properly, you will start to notice a great improvement in your overall dexterity!
